Ah, The Romance Of Summer…

Today, I was reading through some of my old blog posts.

I came across this poem that I wrote a couple of years ago.

There is just something about summer time…

Summertime Memories

IMG_0197Front porches, tree lined streets,

hometown parades, ice cream treats.

Lightning bugs, stars at night,

running barefoot, tea on ice.

Shucking corn, bumblebees

curtains blowing in the breeze.

Lemonade, country roads,

windows down, lawns need mowed.

Just washed linens smell like sun,

staying up late, having fun.

Coke in a bottle, feet in the sand,

old friendships, lots of plans.

Here Comes Summer!!!

I’m ready for summer to get here. Not the heat, mind you. I don’t do well with the heat. I mean I really don’t…and it is not just the fact that I don’t like to sweat either.Heat. Ick.

There is a lot to like about the approaching summer months. The somewhat slower pace, more flexibility with schedules, laying in the hammock, reading a book, sitting on the front porch, grilling out, fireworks, road trips, staying up late, lightening bugs, ice cream cones, swimming, vacations, and no school.

Cloud Parade

Sometimes, it is okay to be child like.

Find a place to sit or lay down and just watch the sky.

Many a good person has taken the time to relax and stare at the clouds…

watching entire parades of animals prancing their way across the heavens.

Time slows on lazy, hazy summer afternoons.

Summer Afternoon

Hot, sunny, summer afternoon in July.

A day for mowing grass, and working in the flower bed.

A day for rides on country roads, ice cream, and family.

A day for open windows, and curtains blowing in the breeze.

Time for sitting on the Adirondack chairs on the front porch, sipping iced tea and enjoying the view.

Summer time.

Summertime, Summertime, Sum..Sum..Summertime

Aaahhh……..I’m now sitting at my desk, having just poured myself a nice tall glass of iced tea. Yes, I know sweet tea is not as healthy as ice cold water. Yeah, yeah, yeah…I consider it my vice. Out of all the horrible habits I COULD have…sweet tea is probably low on the totem pole, so to speak. With that said, now on to my blog for the day.

Even though I can’t stand the humidity, and the bugs drive me crazy…there is something about the summertime that I love. I think it is the whole casual, laid back attitude of the season. The less scheduled times, the outdoor grilling, tan skin, and laying in the hammock. The smell of fresh cut grass, kids camps, swimming pools, visiting with friends, and lightening bugs. Summer requires one to slow down.

Life is so hectic most of the time. If you are anything like me, there are days when you are so insanely busy that you don’t have time to sit still, much less relax. So much to get done, so little time. That is why summer time is a gift. A gift of slowing down. Really, life needs to have moments where we contemplate what is really important. What really makes our lives worth living……and spend time doing those things. Don’t take for granted an impromptu game of Frisbee, water gun fights, evening walks, or eating  hot dogs grilled to perfection, shared with people you love. All small things. Not expensive, not high tech, very simple.

Simple… That is the joy of summer time.
