Driving Towards Home

Farmland, Blewbury The footpath crossing flat ...

I am driving towards home. The sun is shining, I have the radio playing and I am singing at the top of my lungs.

I don’t always remember the words, but that doesn’t stop me, because sometimes the song is too good to be kept inside. It bubbles up, threatening to explode, much like a jostled bottle of soda.

My gaze wanders over the great, open expanses of not yet planted cornfields, the sun pours through the windows, warm on my face and arms.

Blue sky, beautiful blue sky, I feel like I could look at it forever.

Horses graze in the lazy afternoon sunshine. A man drives a tractor.

I feel an air of anticipation as I often do at this time of year. Springtime brings with it a newness of life, a time of growth.

What is planted will soon be born. A celebration?

And what does this life hold? And how will my story unfold?

Taking time… precious, glorious time. Appreciating each moment.

I’m in no hurry, enjoying this slow drive on the back roads.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.                         Romans 15:13  NIV

My Winter Neighbors

English: Canada Geese landing on water

I stared out across the back field, the wind stinging my cheeks and causing my eyes to water. I continued to stand, as if rooted to the spot. I heard the faint honking of the Canada geese, growing louder as they drew closer. The wind picked up and they beat their wings to stay on track. Together. It’s as if they knew that they needed each other to make it through the wind.

Time st00d still…for one brief moment. The wind quieted and the air was perfectly still. I looked up and saw the geese flying low. In the stillness I heard them slowing down. Their wings beat against the air to slow their flight. They were getting ready to land in the lake across the road, the winter lake that used to be a cornfield this past summer. I was mesmerized by the beauty. The leader of the group honked loudly and the rest follow suit.

I continued to watch as they glided into the water with a splash, that I heard with crystal clarity. For that brief, few seconds, I was reminded to slow down, opening my eyes to what was going on around me. Such a simple thing of nature, left a huge impact on me. I was the audience for this group of winter geese, eagerly watching their daring descent into the frigid water. I saw them. Really, saw them.

And such a simple thing, brought me joy.

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?      Matthew 6:26  NIV

Only A Short Time To Live

English: Canadian Horseshoe Falls with city of...

I’m currently watching a movie about a young man that found out he had terminal/stage 4 cancer. In the movie he takes off on his motorcycle, on a journey of self discovery across his homeland of Canada, seeing things through new eyes. It’s the knowing that he is dying that causes him to really live…to truly see. To appreciate.

His perspective changed.

What would I do if I was told I only had a few months left to live?  This question makes for a good movie plot, and allows for me to view some gorgeous scenery while watching this man’s trek across the country…..but, the truth is….

for all of us, it is the change of attitude that causes the change in action.

What are the things that are important to us? Are we thankful for what we have? Or do we take what we have for granted? Who do we thank for this day? This moment? This life?

Do you believe that your life is just a cosmic experiment, and therefore your life is not really important in the big scheme of things? That you are here and then you are gone? That death is final?

Or do you know that you were fearfully and wonderfully made, by God that loves you? He that knows every hair on your head? That understands your motives? That catches all your tears? That sees and knows your heart better than you know yourself?

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:14 NIV

It depends on your perspective…in how you choose to live your life.

None of us is promised tomorrow. Oh, we like to think we have 80 or more years on this earth. That we will die peacefully in our sleep. That we have all the time in the world to….live.

Not true.

The doctor gives the diagnosis. The other car crosses the center line. The heart stops. The brain ceases thinking. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The accident happens. Not waking up.

We are all terminal.

God tells us not to worry about tomorrow, not to live in fear, but to remember that our lives on this earth are like a vapor.

A mist. A swirling mist that is seen in the early morning, soon dissipating with the rising of the sun.

Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. James 4:14  NIV

My life is for a purpose. I am here for a purpose…and so are you.

God chose each of us. There are no mistakes with Him. He is not caught off guard by surprises. You are no surprise.

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word. 2 Thessalonians 2: 16-17  NIV

That changes perspective, doesn’t it?

Although it is good, in my opinion, for each person to take stock of their life, to explore new and exciting things, to change what we need to change, to check off the wishes on the “bucket list” ….. it is equally important to be grateful for the life that we have.

This is the life we were gifted with.

I don’t need to travel the world, to see the sights, to know…

that God infuses wonder in each moment.

Whether a person lives only one hour on this earth, or lives to be one hundred years old…in the scope of eternity, it is all a short time.

So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. John 16:22 NIV

When I Am Thirsty

A Canadian Waterfall

Image via Wikipedia

I just finished reading Ann Voskamp’s blog post for today.

She has left her home in Canada, this week, to meet with Christ…. in Ecuador.

I could not stop the tears that streamed down my cheeks as I read.

God is there,

and God is here…

and who am I not to see Him?

How many times do I go through my days, only to be too busy to meet with Christ?

How many times do I squeeze in my time with Him because I feel an obligation?

Instead of longing to come into the presence of  The Almighty, aware of this privilege, I barely bow my head  .

And my spirit withers,

parched and dry…

desperately needing to stand in the rain

of the Living Water.

37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”  John 7: 37-38  NIV

When I am thirsty,

I need to drink deeply from Him,

like a woman who has spent far too long in the desert.

Because it is when I am full in Christ,

that I am able to reach out to others…

because love always flows from a full heart.

Fall Is In The Air At Home

Last night I was out with my husband and I saw my first tree with leaves changing color. I cannot tell you the excitement that I felt. The long, hot days of summer are beginning to wane…

Last night’s moon was beautiful. Large and golden. This picture does not do it justice. I need to get some fancy gizmos for my camera so I can take better pictures. And yes, it reminded me of Fall.

Here are my candle jar luminaries. I finished them last week.

They look pretty, with their glowing  messages.

The chalkboard with frame is complete. I need to buy one of those metal things and attach it to the back so I can hang it.

Here is the chippy child’s school chair I bought at an estate sale this past Saturday. Perfect for my bear.

I am a lover of bears…

I bought this quite a while ago. Those are heavy, old, door knobs. I love how the person made a pegboard using door knobs. Repurposed. Love it!

My Moravian star. I was looking through a Pottery Barn catalog a couple of days ago. I saw a similar star for around $100. I got this at a yard sale in Knoxville, TN. for $5.

Ready to use my lamps, when the evenings get cooler.

Love this mirror. I caught my son in the reflection.

A piece of architectural salvage as art.

Weathering Life

Lightning

The morning sun pours in through the windows and puddles golden on the floor. It is a bright morning following a stormy night. The lightness is in direct contrast to the steel gray of last night’s weather. I think that life, in general, is a lot like the weather.

*we can try and plan outdoor activities, schedule things on the calendar….but, sometimes it rains and plans change.

*storms are unpredictable, and sometimes scary….but, they don’t last forever.

*as much as we enjoy the sunshine, we need the rain. Rain helps things to grow.

*sun is important and our body needs it for good health and for our moods, but too much sunshine and we get hurt.

*Sunshine and rain are both important in nature…and in life.

Enjoy the sunny times of life, appreciate them. Embrace them. Remember them.

But, also remember that every life is going to have rain…need rain. Learn to weather the storms. Hang on tight. Ride them out.

Both sunshine and rain help you to grow.

Who Gets To Choose?

The skull and crossbones, a common symbol for ...

Out of sight. Out of mind.

This news story is tragic and it also scares me. This is a current story that is happening to a family in Canada, our neighbor’s to the north.

The parents are asking to take their terminally ill baby home, to die. They know he will eventually die…they are not fighting that. They just want him to die at home, and not in some sterile, impersonal hospital.

The courts got involved, and said that the breathing tube must be removed at the hospital and he will die there. I suppose the decision is part of Canada’s health care system.

I have a real problem with this. There does not appear to be any compassion in this decision. The little boy is just another tough decision to make. The humanity is lost. Are they removing his tube, and letting him die because it is too expensive to keep him alive? Why does the government get to make that decision? Who are they, to play God?

(One of the family members)”I believe when the medical world doesn’t understand a situation, they just want to get rid of it,” Samar said. “That’s exactly what’s happening.”

From Canada, With Love…

A beach near Stanhope, Prince Edward Island, C...

I had never seen the movies based on the book. At 42, I asked for Anne (with an “e”) of Green Gables for Christmas. My husband bought me the collectors edition. The two of us watched the entire series over Christmas vacation. I loved it! The actress, Megan Follows, played Anne perfectly.  I now want to visit Prince Edward Island, Canada. The scenery was gorgeous. The blue of the ocean against the  the green meadows. Those of you that live in Canada, please tell me that it really looks that way….in real life.  I was amused by Anne’s spirit. “You can call me Cordelia.” Is that your name? “No, but I’ve always liked Cordelia.” What IS your name? ” Well, if you won’t call me Cordelia, Anne…with an ‘e’, if you don’t mind.” Thank you Lucy Maud Montgomery for giving us the wonderful spirit of Anne.

A couple of Christmas’s ago I bought my husband, The Red Green Show. I had never heard of it until he mentioned that he had watched it at some point and loved it. For those of you not in the know….it sort of is the Canadian version of Home Improvement. Men meet at the Possum Lodge in northwestern Ontario, to solve the problems of a man’s world….much to the detriment of those around them. I laughed my way through those DVD’s.

All: I’m a man, but I can change, if I have to, I guess.

I have several readers in Canada. To all my neighbors in the north, what are some Canadian shows that you enjoy? (or shows from the past) Make some suggestions for me.
