Made For Another World

I am a fan of the late C.S. Lewis. You know how people sometimes will ask, “If you could sit down and have dinner with any three people (past or present) who would they be?” I always choose Clive Staples Lewis as one of my people. He was an interesting man. Today, some of his words keep bumping around in my head……

“If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”

Sigh…….he nailed it. I don’t really need to say anything else.

Peace and Purpose

God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing.  C.S Lewis

I see the headlines as I wait in the check out line. Access to all the money and fame in the world. Glitz and glamour. Paparazzi.

And yet, seemingly some of the most unhappy people in the world.

Commercials that tell us that we need to look better. Be thinner. More tanned. More wealthy. We need to eat certain brands of food, shop at certain stores and wear certain clothes.

All to obtain happiness. Oh, that isn’t what the advertisers actually say….but, let’s be real. That is just exactly what they mean. It is what they are trying to spin. The implication is there.

Happiness from things.

Chasing through this life for “things” won’t bring real happiness, as a matter of fact, as in my first example, it can instead bring personal pain and a lack of any true happiness.

People continue to search…looking for this elusive happiness.  Fleeting. Just out of reach.

Life can be empty without purpose.

What is your purpose?  What do you long for? Does it include happiness and peace?

God, and His Son Jesus, give that.

They give what this world never can.

Back To The Truth

Description unavailable

“If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found that it has no meaning:  just as, if there were no light in the universe and therefore no creatures with eyes, we should never know it was dark. Dark would be a word without meaning.”  — C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity

Dark would be a word without meaning. That particular sentence struck me. So simple, and yet so profound.

How would we, as humans, understand dark, if we didn’t have the light to compare it with?

How can we know when we do morally bad things, if there is not perfection to compare it with?

In a world of moral relativism, where it’s become okay to do something if  “it feels right”, or “I’m not hurting anyone so I’ll do what I want”.

Some, choose to live blind… in the dark, rather than admit that God is.

God is the absolute.

He is truth.

and it is He that gives this life meaning.

For The Love Of Words

I admit it.

There is no doubt about it.

I can’t help it.

There’s no changing it.

I am a lover of words

and a confirmed bibliophile.

I so enjoy the written word. It is a part of me. I intently listen to the spoken word. It challenges me. Choosing just the right word to say...it is important to me. Words have power.

Today I woke up to gray skies and rain. The perfect day for reading, after I finish the days chores, of course. There is nothing better, than to settle into my favorite chair, with a blanket a warm drink and a good book.

I look around my house now and I see shelved books, stacked books, books on the night stand, books on the floor, cookbooks near my stove in the kitchen, antique books on display in the dining room. Sigh.

My Bible. The book most important. The book that feeds me. The words from THE WORD. Life giving. Life altering. The pages are worn, filled with pen marks and colors of various highlighters. I’ve underlined, circled, taken notes, and added exclamation points. The words themselves that never change, but do change me.
