Things Will Look Much Differently Then

The air nips cold. My sweater sure feels good today, I pull it closer as I go about my daily chores. I cannot believe that we are already into the third week of October. Time, truly stops for no one. I’m feeling contemplative today, thinking about all I need to get done before winter makes its first frigid visit. Not far off… This morning I was standing on the front porch, waiting on the dogs to get finished with their mandatory jog around the property, when I gazed across the field to the barn standing at the other end. The color of the utilitarian structure was white gray against the brown and dry corn stalks. Wasn’t it just weeks ago that the trees bordering the field were green? And the air was moist with late summer heat? The movement of time grows louder in my mind. The pages on the calendar turn quickly. I memorize the snapshot I take with my eyes….in just two months it will be the week of Christmas. Things will look much differently then. Time will continue to click off the moments.

Even the stark branches are beautiful

The Best Way To Really Live

The turquoise Ball mason jar that I have setting on the kitchen window sill, is striking when the sun shines through it. A haze of blue-green illuminates the glass. A simple utilitarian vessel becomes beauty when touched by the light. It is amazing what one can see when her eyes are opened to all that is around her. The simple becomes something to marvel at, to appreciate, realizing that all things are gifts.

Life is so hectic and we often times rush through it, only glancing at the moments as they blur past us. The rushing through everything is a way to have a life, but that is not the best way to really live.

Blazing Oranges And Reds

The blazing oranges and reds are muted by the gray morning sky. The monstrous combine sits waiting in the field across the road, waiting for the farmer to finish harvesting his soybean crop. The air is cool-moist, making me wonder if more rain isn’t soon on the way? I pull my thick sweater closer to me, its warmth feels good against the chilly breeze. This time of the year seems slower to me, almost deliberate, as if the whole world is getting ready to snuggle in for what lies ahead.

The view from my side yard looks like a Currier and Ives print. Burnt oranges and reds, and flaming yellows spread across the horizon. A barn cat perches on top of the corner fence post, as if surveying the acreage of the horse pasture. The collie sniffs the moist air, smelling something, that my nose can’t.

I truly enjoy this time of the year. I want to take photo after photo of its glory…so I can remember.

A perfect morning for a hot drink, and contemplation.

Loving This Season

I wrote this poem a few years ago…..

Ode To Autumn

A chill in the air
Canadian geese I hear?
Time for sweaters
autumn is here!

Pumpkins, and corn shocks
hot chocolate mix
football and soccer
My autumn fix!

The smell of chimney smoke
is in the air,
A fire in the fireplace
the perfect pair.

This season is a favorite
because of family together
holidays that bring us close
No matter the weather.

I love this season
it truly is the best
snuggling in before
the long winters rest.

There’s A Chill In The Air

The day began early, after a fitful night’s sleep. Normally, sleep comes easily to me, often times as soon as my head hits the pillow. I was up soon after the dimly lit morning got underway. After getting dressed, brushing my teeth and washing my face, I was ready to face the day. The cool morning air, ushered in by a large cold front from Canada, chilled my bare arms. I made a mental note to wear my jacket when I went over to the barn to feed the animals. The sky was gray and overcast on this Friday. It was just beginning to barely look like Fall, even though it is feeling like it.

The greens of summer are starting to fade. The flowers of the field have turned to a golden yellow, and a few leaves are getting ready for their colorful Autumn parade. I listen as geese lift off from the pond across the road. I know geese can be messy and downright mean when they want to be, but I love to watch them flying in formation. They stick together, they work together, to make it to their destination.

The other day, at the grocery store, I picked up some canned pumpkin and some pumpkin spice. I love all things pumpkin and so, I have plans for (sugar free) pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin muffins, and pumpkin roll. There is something about this time of year, the scent of apple and spice candles, soft blankets, warm drinks, cooler temperatures and beautiful colors. A couple of months of blazing glory before winter sets in…..

It’s A Tad Bit Chilly

We are having unseasonably cool temperatures here in Ohio. The highs have been in the low to mid 70’s and the lows, at night, in the 50’s. I love this, but my  heat miser, “summer should be hot and humid”, friends most definitely do not. The weatherman is calling for these cooler temps all the way through mid August. From that point it will only be a month until Fall officially begins…my favorite time of the year.

So, today, in the midst of an Ohio cool spell, I’m thinking of Autumn. Do you want to join be for one brief moment?

Early Morning Blessings

The early morning sun shone briefly, before giving way to a steel gray sky. IMG_0187

The wind bit hard, even as I snuggled into my coat. The hood blew back and hair went wild in the wind. I strained to see through the strands blowing crazy.

Oh Autumn, you leave me chilled and chattering.

Faded hues of autumn, framed by gray skies.

Barren branches like gnarly fingers, scratching the sky.

The door, caught in the wind, slams shut. The sound echoes over the roar of the morning wind.

The smell of coffee, and the welcoming warmth from hands wrapped around the mug.

The light pools on the kitchen table as I type out life. What it means to live in this moment. To feel time, just exactly as it is in the now.

So many things to get done, before  true winter arrives. I am not quite ready. The thought crosses my mind, are any of us ever ready?

And yet, time slows as I gaze out my kitchen window. I notice some oranges and reds still clinging to trees across the field.

Fields left scraggly and broken, where summer’s corn once stood.

Those leaves fighting against the wind for their last moments of glory.

Even though there is much to do, and a million things on my list…I stop.

And I realize that I am happy.

I thank God for His blessings…because no matter how busy, or hectic the days may be

He has given me much, so much.

I bask in the warmth of His love.
