In between

*******************************************************************************

The in between is often times the unknown.

Beginnings can be interesting, or exciting, or maybe even down right scary.

Endings can be sad, or frustrating, or maybe a relief.

It is that in between that can be difficult.

And sometimes that journey of the in between is what makes all the rest, worthwhile.

The waiting is between the beginning and the end…

The Flies Are Driving Me Nuts

Don’t we all need a good laugh sometimes? Going through my archives and thought I would share this little gem.

The flies are driving me nuts. That is one thing about summer time when one has animals…..flies in the chicken coop, flies hanging around the horse. Ugh. I hate flies. What is their purpose anyway, except to harass?

Last summer I had some of the same issues……..

They’re Coming To Take Me Away…

On this incredibly stinkin’ hot day in the rural Midwest, I thought we could all use a good dose of humor. I will allow you to laugh at my expense. Dawn vs. Nature. It is not a pretty sight.

I thought that we had moved to a picturesque setting in the rural farmland of Ohio. Actually, this turned out to be true, although I had no idea the other critters that had also chosen to live alongside us on our little slice of land. In the Spring we had a raccoon under the deck. This visitor caused our dogs to nearly go berserk. At 3 am in the morning. The dogs couldn’t get to the “scared out of his wits” raccoon, and the raccoon was NOT coming out with two “Cujos” on the loose. There was not much sleeping going on that night for anyone in a five-mile radius of our house.

We have a ground hog that has a vacation home down where our property meets the road. He is quiet and keeps to himself. Every time I see him, The Wind and The Willows comes to mind.

We have Bambi and family that trek across our side yard on a fairly regular basis. Fun to watch, unless one decides to jump out directly in front of the family van….then it is a little scary. The other night my husband laid some rubber on the road when he braked hard not to hit a deer that literally came out of nowhere, directly in front of us. My heart was hammering in my chest during that little moment, as I was nearly decapitated by the stupid shoulder strap safety belt. Are there any statistics on death by shoulder strap?

In August and September, we have the gnat plague. Where in the world do gnats come from? Honestly, there is no food sitting out, nothing like that….they just appear like clockwork. In August. They stay for two months and the family chases them around with the bug zapper before they disappear, or are inadvertently eaten, as they are always in my way while fixing dinner. Um…they look like pepper. Sorry. I looked gnats up on the internet. They are a nuisance, but harmless and will not kill anyone if eaten. I don’t know why they come here. It’s one of life’s mysteries.

In late Fall and early winter, the field mice decide that it is time for them to head toward their winter retreat. The retreat happens to be our garage, and if they are slick enough….the main living quarters. This does not set well with me. At all. I hate mice with a white hot passion. They mock me, as they scratch around in the walls. I find myself yelling at them ….and I know I am not imagining that I hear the faint sound of laughter. Go ahead and laugh! It’s all fun and games until I start laying out glue traps. Stinkin’ little fur balls. Then who will be laughing? I digress…….mice put me in a precarious mental state.

We are currently battling a horse fly population that has reached biblical proportions. Now, before I moved to Ohio I thought I had seen horse flies. I was wrong….at least not like these. I didn’t realize the name horse fly accurately described the SIZE of the fly. These flies are huge. Their heads are the size of my thumb nail. I am not kidding. One has to make a run for it when leaving or entering the house. If one should linger too long on the deck, there is a great possibility that said person could possibly be carried off by the mutant horse fly gang. They dive bomb anyone on the deck, like miniature Kamikaze pilots.

I better go. I’m heading out to the deck.

I think I’ll take the electric bug zapper with me. It reminds me of a lightsaber.

Just call me Luke Skywalker.

The Sweetest Harmony

Last week I was in Costa Rica, having fun and enjoying the tropical locale. Good conversation with great people. Fresh pineapple with sweetness that was addicting. Sitting in a chair on the beach, watching the ocean crash into the sand.The opportunity for me to enjoy…

English: Sunset over the Pacific Ocean, Tango ...

Blessed beyond words.

The scales tip wildly– me in an expensive vacation home, catered too, fed, given so much. They in houses that are necessary shelter, very little comfort, practical and plain.

My brothers and sisters. We are very different and yet so much the same.

And these things Lord, the opportunities given to me, blessings beyond imagination– am I here too for such a time as this?

What is my role, my responsibility? The challenge, the honor? This one life that I have been given. The minutes that make up the lifetime.

The ocean waves roll in, breaking hard, causing a foamy surf.

The sun shines on the Pacific water, as I contemplate time, and life, and purpose.

Made in Your image–these people. Me. All of us.

Loved by You, always by You. The vast ocean could not, cannot, contain your love…no, not the whole of the world can contain it. For it is your love that covers us all. No matter the color of our skin, the language that we speak, the differences of culture or custom.

And isn’t it my job, my responsibility to share? Not just the vastness of Your ocean with others but, the great depth of Your love?

And shouldn’t John 3:16 be the song that I hear in the crashing waves on this beach so far away?  The melody of the love song that pulls us all into sweet harmony with You.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.  John 3:16-17 NIV

Tamarindo Time

My husband and I just returned from our trip to Costa Rica. The company that he works for had their annual Summit in Tamarindo, Costa Rica this year. Luckily for me, spouses and significant others were also encouraged to attend. It was great, and we really enjoyed our time there. All of us were very aware that time is felt a little differently in that area, and we teasingly referred to it as “Tamarindo time”. Life slowed down, and became more casual. Schedules were only loosely used, and there wasn’t the normal frantic pace of having to get everything done.

Today I am thankful for:

* the chance to slow down

* breathtaking sunsets

English: Tamarindo Beach, Guanacaste, Costa Ri...

* new friends

* laughter

* Chef Derek and staff

* kindness of the locals

* learning the stories of others

* bare feet

* pineapple and fresh fruit

* monkeys that woke me up each morning at 5am

* safe travel

* TV and movies on the plane

* no lost luggage

* driving down the road to home

* animals that are glad we arrived

* sleeping in my own bed

* unpacking and washing clothes

* early afternoon, summer storm

* Costa Rican coffee

Life is good.

Each day, each moment, is a gift.

I am grateful for it all.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens… Ecclesiastes 3:1 NIV

It’s A Choice

Being thankful is a choice.

In choosing to be thankful for all things, a person can experience joy.

Not because life is always simple and easy, as anyone that has lived for any amount of time can attest.

But, because God has provided the greatest gift of all, in His son Jesus, and He alone is enough…

And yet, God chooses to gift us with so much more, abundantly, lavishly.

Live life with your eyes wide open. Open to all His great and wonderful gifts.

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all
times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8 NIV

Today I am thankful for:

* getting ready for the trip

* anticipation for what is ahead

* making memories with my husband

* healthy children

* hugs and I love you

* playing with the dogs

* early morning, feeding the animals

* rainy Monday

* shopping

* a clean house

* sunflowers

* a beautifully mowed lawn

* the back property fenced in

* taking beautiful pictures of the country

* sleeping in late

Fall…

**************************************************************************************

When I first saw this word, my mind immediately went to my favorite season of the year.

I thought of sweaters and cozy socks, high school and college football, soccer practices, hot chocolate, harvest, warm oranges and burnt reds, a chill in the air, pumpkins and spice, corn mazes and candles, bonfires and the smell of wood smoke, shorter days and long drives in the country.

I just love this season, and love that the season ends with Thanksgiving….and thanks giving.

An Evening Walk

Sitting on the porch swing last night, looking out across the yard to the field across the road.

I just love this scene, in every season.

There is just something about a summer evening in the country.
